History & Geography
We aim to provide children with the critical thinking skills to investigate the past and to develop their curiosity of the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
We aim to provide children with the critical thinking skills to investigate the past. We have carefully planned topics to stimulate children’s curiosity and build a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. Children are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think deeply, weigh evidence, listen and debate their thoughts and ideas. Children are taught to think as historians and to recognise that there are different ways to interpret historical events and that knowledge is drawn from different sources. Children will develop a strong sense of identity and build a cultural understanding of their heritage. We teach children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives and the choices we make today so that they are respectful, tolerant and knowledgeable global citizens.
The teaching of geography gives pupils an understanding of the world around them, its environments, places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. At St Mary and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, its interconnectedness and their place in it. The geography curriculum at St Mary and St Jospeh also enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We intend to develop children’s curiosity and a fascination of the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our topics offer a range of opportunities for investigating places around the world as well as physical and human processes. Our lessons are intended to improve children’s geographical vocabulary, map skills and geographical facts and provide opportunities for consolidation, challenge and variety to ensure interest and progress in the subject. We teach children to understand how geography influences our lives and the choices we make today so that they are respectful, tolerant and knowledgeable global citizens.
