Maths

At St Mary and St Jospeh Catholic Primary School our children are given the opportunity to develop their mathematical potential through a rich, engaging curriculum; maths is delivered through a mastery approach where all children can achieve in maths.

Maths is a skill we use on a daily basis and is an essential part of everyday life, therefore we endeavour to ensure that children develop confidence and enjoyment in maths that will stay with them throughout their lives and empower them in future life.

We encourage our children to be willing to ‘have a go’ and not be afraid to make mistakes, as we are all there to support each other on our journey. We believe that unlocking mathematical fluency is an essential life skill for all learners and is a pre-requisite to being able to reason and solve problems mathematically.

We place great emphasis on the use of concrete resources and pictorial representations to enable children to fully understand concepts and principals, so when they are presented with abstract calculations and questions, they approach them with confidence and increasing independence. Our aim is to develop a positive culture of self-motivation, deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths that produces strong, secure learning.
